From Everyday Grandma To This – Angela Deem Weight Loss

The Story of Angela Deem Weight Loss! The A-Z on what you need to know to achieve these results too!

‘I felt like I would have died without the weightloss’ Angela Deem

Who is Angela Deem?

  • Angela Deems is a Reality Tv and Film star; a Social Media Influencer and Model
  • She found international fame for being part of the TLC Network franchise 90 Day Fiancé Series
  • Fans from all over the world follow all of Angela’s exploits, especially her dramatic weight loss and new healthy look.
  • Angela Kaye Deem was born on 9 December 1965 in Hazelhurst, Georgia, United States of America. A 1.7m tall blond Sagittarian, she knew that she wanted to live an extraordinary life from a young age.
  • Her first job was in a clinic, but she soon set up her own business, an online clothing store, ‘Angela Deem Store’, proving her determination, courage and focus that would later help her through the challenges of weight loss and lifestyle changes.

What Motivated her to Lose 90lbs in a Year?

  • Angela Deem has two children and six grandchildren who she adores and spends a lot of time with. Angela states that her prime motivation for losing weight was to live a healthy, active life and to have as much time with her family as possible.

‘I couldn’t even walk in the grocery store with the kids to get groceries. I was out of breath.’

  • Throughout the airing of 90-day Fiancé, she received a lot of negative heckling from the paparazzi for her large size. Angela had always been a large lady and had unsuccessfully tried numerous diets, eating plans, and exercise routines. She wanted to dance and play with her grandchildren, to be healthy and full of energy and life. That was her goal.

A Controversial Decision

The attention given to her dramatic 90lbs weight loss has been tremendous. Finally, Angela Deem decided that she had had enough, she had tried everything, and she felt the surgical intervention was her lost hope.

Michael, Angela’s husband, and her family had doubts about her decision. Every surgery carries with it a certain amount of risk, and weight loss surgery may occasionally result in long-term health issues. However, Angela consulted with her medical doctor. She decided that this was the best route for her to achieve the slim, healthy, fit, and youthful life she yearned for despite her family’s objections and concerns.

Angela Deem Weight Loss Surgical Journey

Angela Deem Weight Loss | Healthier Me Today

‘I don’t want to die because of my weight’ Angela Deem

Surgery does carry risks, which is why Angela’s Doctors implemented a pre-operative program to lower her blood pressure and reduce her smoking, amongst other measures such as having a care practitioner to advise on diet and what to expect throughout the process.

She then traveled to Beverly Hills, where she underwent five-prong surgeries, including:

  • Liposuction
  • Breast Reduction
  • Cosmetic Reconstruction
  • Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery is known as a procedure where the surgeon creates a narrow sleeve by stapling the stomach vertically and removing the stomach’s more significant, curved part. This allows the patient to eat smaller meals with fewer calories, leading to weight loss and weight maintenance.

Liposuction is considered a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips, thighs, and buttocks
  • Neck and arms

Liposuction also shapes and contours these areas.

All of Angela’s surgeries were a success. Her recovery took three long months that were at times uncomfortable and painful, but she persevered!

Life After Surgery…

Angela Deem is the first to admit that she had never really loved what she calls ‘ Diet Food’, especially salads, smoothies (with Green smoothies still her worst to this day!), and drinking water. However, she knew that she had to change her lifestyle and eating habits as the surgery had only begun.

Using all of her determination and willpower, she began by removing the following from her diet – is this what kickstarted Angela Deem’s Weight loss:

  • All food with a high-fat content
  • All food and drinks
  • With a high sugar content
  • Processed Food

Replacing them with smaller portion sizes and eating:

  • Organic food
  • Protein-rich food
  • Smoothies (her current favorite is Mango, watermelon, and pineapple)
  • Antioxidant enriched weight loss Gummies

Angela Deem has recently been seen with Natasha Fett, a very high profile Personal Trainer; Nutritionist; Physical Therapist, and Personal Chef. Natasha Fett has worked with celebrities such as Mathew McConaughey and Fergie, to name but a few.

With all the surgeries a success, Natasha Fett by her side plus her determination to succeed, Angela Deem, one year on from the beginning of her weight loss journey, is confident, glowing, and living her best life!

Is the Angela Deem Weight Loss Surgery Right For You?

Angela Deem Weight Loss | Healthier Me Today

There is a lot of debate regarding surgery for weight loss, with many diverse opinions. Most Medical Practitioners advise surgery only as a ‘last resort’ solution – when all else has been tried and failed, or if it is considered urgent ( Angela Deem had developed weight-related respiratory issues).

Here are a few facts for you to consider When Looking at Angela Deem Weight Loss:

It is not an inexpensive option. The costs for Doctors; Specialists, surgeons; Pre and Postoperative care; Hospital stay, to list a few, add up to a significant sum of money or drain on your Health Insurance if they cover it.

Bear in mind that Angela Deem did not personally pay all her costs. The TLC Network covered a significant amount in exchange for content coverage, plus the Beverly Hills Clinic waived costs as a form of promotion agreement.

  • Recovery may be slow and uncomfortable.
  • It may take up to three months before you can eat solid food regularly
  • Eating habits, including portion and calorie control, have to be learned

Long term side effects such as:

  1. Hernia
  2. GallStones
  3. Stomach perforation
  4. Low blood sugar

If you feel that this is the solution for you, your Health Care Practitioner can discuss the pros and cons of your situation. You always have the right to decide what is best for You. Write down why you want it done, how it will improve your sense of self and your life, and ask every question you can think of, even if it seems silly. Then be bold and take that first step, make that appointment and start the journey to YOUR best life!

What Can I Do While I am Still Deciding…

Most Doctors still believe that burning calories and including some physical activity in your life is the best long-term solution. To lose weight in this way does take time, energy, and commitment, but its effectiveness is unmatched. In addition, the mind-body sync and sense of goal accomplishment you develop are a massive plus of losing weight through diet and exercise.

How To Take Care of Your Mental Health Post Covid-19

Covid-19 has brought out the worst in those who have a mental illness. Unfortunately, the pandemic affected those who have always had excellent and robust mental health. There is nothing wrong with admitting that Covid-19 has had a negative effect on your mental well-being. It is a natural response to such stressful times.

Why Did The Pandemic Affect My Mental Health?

The pandemic has negatively impacted both those who have mental illness and those who do not. There are various reasons as to why so many have been mentally affected. First, the pandemic caused a lot of uncertainty. No one knew what would happen or who would be infected.

Many people suffered significant losses during the Covid-19 pandemic. Some had lost loved ones. Others had lost jobs and housing. In addition, the pandemic caused many to go into debt as the stay at home orders caused businesses to close. Some companies closed temporarily. Others closed permanently. For businesses that closed permanently, staff were left without income. The lack of income has been one of the most significant contributing factors to depression during Covid-19.

For social butterflies, stay at home orders, and social distancing caused feelings of isolation and anxiety. For those who were already suffering from anxiety and depression, having no reason to leave the house or leave their bedrooms caused a lack of self-care. This worsened the mental states of many.

The uncertainty caused people to live in fear. Daily routines could be no more, and human contact had been frowned upon. Yet, humans need to have a social life and outside contact. Not being able to receive it will affect your mental health negatively.

Taking Care of Your Mental Health Post Covid-19

How To Take Care of Your Mental Health Post Covid-19 | Healthier Me Today

It could be hard to find the motivation to take care of yourself when things go back to the new normal. Taking things easy and easing into a new routine will help your mental health recovery.

It’s important to note that it is okay to feel how you are feeling. For example, feelings of anxiety, depression and fear are normal in the current circumstances. Therefore, you should not feel ashamed for how you are processing Covid-19.

Investing in a hobby could be beneficial. Having something to do could act as a distraction and help you relax. Finding a way to relax is crucial when dealing with mental health.

Talk to family and friends about your feelings. Discussing your fears with someone could help ease your mind and put things into perspective. The social setting will also benefit you.

Meditation and Yoga have also shown benefits in improving mental health. Yoga stretches the muscles to release tension, and meditation helps you connect. Other exercises will also benefit your mental health. It is essential to stay as active as possible.

Other methods include:

  • Drinking a lot of water
  • Taking walks
  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
  • Take long showers/baths.

When to See a Professional

Dealing with the stress and anxiety that comes from Covid-19 is not easy. Everyone processes emotions differently. If you feel like you are no longer coping or have thoughts of self-harm or suicide, it’s essential to speak to a professional. A licensed therapist or psychiatrist will guide you and give you healthy coping mechanisms. There is no need to go through all your emotions and fear alone.

Your Need for Professional Help

There has been a stigma around receiving professional help for mental health. There is, however, no shame in taking care of yourself and your mentality. Seeing a therapist or mental health professional has many benefits. Having someone to talk to allows you to know your feelings and emotions. If Covid-19 has caused you any form of trauma, speaking to a professional will help you work through it.

Say Yes to Self-Care

Improving your mental health begins with taking care of yourself—practice self-care by doing what you need to do to feel better. Take a long bath or spend time on your hobby. Covid-19 has been a stressful time. Take your time to process the whole ordeal.

How To Guide My Child Through War Stressors?

We need to learn how we can help our children cope with war! Anxiety is your body’s natural response to the unknown. I am sure we feel a little anxious and fearful as we watch these horrific events play out. Now for our children, these events are undoubtedly terrifying. Here are tips on keeping your childless stressed during this time.

How Are YOU Feeling?

Our children absorb more from us than we realise. This is because they are deeply tuned to our reactions and emotional state. This is why we need to recognise our stress and anxiety regarding the war stressors and deal with it proactively and positively. Also, be aware of how you communicate with others about the conflict.

We are allowed to tell our kids that we are also scared and that this is normal in situations of war or terrorism. This being said, try to not burden or worry your children too much with your emotions. Always wait until you are in a calm and clear state of mind before answering questions about the war. Then, let them know that you are healthily dealing with your feelings.

Is my Child Distressed?

While it is only natural for your child to be feeling confused, anxious or even a little upset, the reality of war stressors will affect every child differently. The question is, will my child cope with war?

As younger children struggle to verbalise their feelings, they will start showing behavioural changes if stressed. Be on the lookout for the following:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Wetting the Bed
  • Becoming extra needy and clingy
  • Thumb Sucking
  • Baby Talk

Older children will be more open and expressive with their feelings but still watch out for:

  • Speaking about death or fears of death
  • Persistent distressing thoughts
  • Being preoccupied with war
  • Consumed with the news or social media about the conflict
  • Problems sleeping (too much or too little)

Who Will Be Most Affected?

As every child is different, their reactions and emotions will be unique. Every child needs to feel safe and secure, but some might need a little extra attention:

  • Children of immigrant or refugee families.
  • Children with family members or friends who live in Russia or Ukraine.
  • Children who have a mental illness.
  • Children who have experienced traumatic events.

These children are more susceptible to anxiety and stress, and therefore the topic of war needs to be dealt with more sensitively. Depending on their age or level of trauma they have experienced, we suggest you first make sure that you are aware of their stress levels through recognisable signs or actions they would have shown previously under challenging situations.

When Should My Child Seek Professional Help?

Children with past trauma in their past or who struggle with mental health issues, it is always a good idea to consult with their doctor before bringing up such sensitive subjects as war. While talking to your children openly and honestly, you will tell if there are signs of stress and how they are coping. For example, suppose your child seems to be struggling to cope with images or information they have heard. In that case, it is recommended to seek professional help by first making an appointment with your child’s paediatrician.

The doctor will be able to assess your child and will, if necessary, make the appropriate referrals to seek further medical support either with a mental health professional or a social worker.

The Matter at Hand

You will be the first to know if there are any changes in their behaviour or attitude that is out of the ordinary. For example, if they suddenly become quiet or withdrawn, make the time to sit with them one on one in a comfortable setting and try to discuss the matter at hand. From there, you will know how affected they have been by war and correctly assess how to move forward. Albeit seeking medical advice or a mental health professional, the stress in children should never be ignored. Helping your child cope with war stressors is essential for their mental health.

16 States That Have Removed Mask Mandates – Updated

16 States That Have Removed Mask Mandates – Updated. The world had declared a state of emergency when Coronavirus (Covid-19) hit in 2020. The World Health Organization brought forth a set of rules and regulations to stop the spread of the deadly virus. Numerous states and countries issued stay-at-home orders and nationwide lockdowns to ensure that the virus doesn’t spread. The goal was and still is to lessen the curve of Covid-19 infections.

How Serious is Coronavirus?

The coronavirus (Covid-19) disease is a highly infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This virus can cause significant health problems and lead to death. Therefore restrictions and rules must be followed to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The virus affects the respiratory system. This causes a mild to moderate respiratory illness, and many recover without special treatment. It is, however, possible for some to become seriously ill and require immediate medical attention.

Covid-19 has a higher fatality rate amongst those with pre-existing medical conditions. Covid-19, however, can affect anyone at any age and be just as fatal for someone with an impeccable health.

The virus spreads through small liquid particles when someone sneezes, coughs, sings, or breathes. It spreads through the nose and the mouth. Once the virus enters your system, it attacks your healthy cells and eventually kills some of them, especially those in your lungs. The results could be fatal.

How Can I Keep Safe From Covid-19?

Keeping safe from Covid-19 means you’ll have to do more than just wash your hands. The virus can live on surfaces for hours, even days. Keeping safe from this deadly virus might seem impossible, but it’s easier than you think. Wearing your mask and regularly sanitizing already reduces your risk of contracting the virus. There are, however, other ways to protect you and your family.

  • Follow your state’s mask mandate and regulations: These regulations are put into place based on the severity of the infections in each state.
  • Regularly sanitize the surfaces in your home: Things such as doorknobs and kitchen counters are constantly touched by people and things. Sanitizing them regularly will ensure that the virus doesn’t stick to it.
  • Wipe down your groceries: This sounds silly, but it’s crucial. If you go to the shop to buy a carton of milk, you are unaware of how many before you touched that milk carton, if they’re following regulations, or their Covid-19 status. Since the virus can survive on surfaces, it might stay behind on your groceries as well.
  • Keep your hands out of your face: The virus could be on your hands. Since it spreads by droplets, a single handshake or hug could possibly infect you. Avoiding your face ensures that the virus has no entry point until you reach your sanitiser.
  • Avoid crowded places: You don’t know the Covid-19 status of everyone there. You don’t know if they’ve been honest about their Covid-19 situation either. Avoiding large crowds will lessen the possibility of you getting infected.

States That Have Removed Mask Mandates

16 States That Have Removed Mask Mandates - Updated | Healthier Me Today

Since the vaccine has been rolled out, immunity against Covid-19 has risen. As a result, fewer people are getting dangerously infected, and masks seem less mandatory, as everyone has followed regulations. In addition, some states have been lucky enough to eradicate their mask mandate as the virus subsides.

These states are:

  • Alaska:

Face masks aren’t required but recommended. In addition, Alaskans have been asked to Social Distance themselves and do their part to stop the spread of the virus.

  • Arizona:

It is up to different counties in Arizona to mandate masks. There is no mask mandate on the state itself.

  • Florida:

Local municipalities might have mask mandates. There is, however, no statewide mask mandate in Florida.

  • Georgia:

Some essential employees still require masks. The mask mandate, however, depends on the county.

  • Idaho:

The state has no mask mandate. Different municipalities, however, do.

  • Iowa:

The decline of Covid-19 allowed for the mask mandate to fall away in Iowa.

  • Mississippi:

There is no mask mandate in this state. The rapid release of the Covid-19 vaccine allowed the infection numbers to drop and the mask mandate.

  • Missouri:

There is no statewide mask requirement in Missouri.

  • Montana:

Local municipalities may enforce their mask mandate. The state no longer requires masks.

  • Nebraska:

Nebraska has removed its statewide mandate. However, clients and staff in different service industries are still required to wear masks.

  • North Dakota:

There is currently no mask mandate in North Dakota. The wearing of masks is, however, encouraged by the state.

  • Oklahoma:

Face masks are now only required in indoor public spaces in Oklahoma.

  • South Carolina:

There are counties and cities in South Carolina that still have mask mandates. The state, however, has none.

  • South Dakota:

There are no mask requirements in South Dakota.

  • Tennessee:

The mask requirements differ by county. Tennessee, however, has no prerequisites.

  • Texas:

Covid-19 has declined in the state, allowing mask mandates to no longer be necessary.

To Mask Or Not to Mask!

With so many people adhering to the state-mandated rules and regulations of Covid-19, mask mandates have been able to fall away. Different counties and municipalities could still require masks; it is, however, not state-mandated and at the discretion of that state.

Does Medicare Cover the Flu Shot?

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a virus that causes coughing, fever, sore throat, fatigue, and headaches. Death can become part of the equation if you are an elder, primarily because of the weaker immune system. This is why flu shots are essential, as they protect and help prevent the spread and contracting of the possibly fatal virus.

The flu can lead to other illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, which are extremely dangerous if left too long. Thankfully there is a simple way to prevent the flu virus from turning into a fatal disease. If eligible, medical programs, such as Medicare even offer this potentially life-saving shot for free.

What is Medicare?

It began in 1965 in the United States by the Social Security Administration and is now administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Medicare is a health insurance program tailored to people at the age of 65 and older,  younger individuals with disabilities, and those with end-stage renal disease such as ESRD (permanent kidney failure that requires a transplant or dialysis).

Medicare offers four parts ranging in what the customer needs. These are labeled Part A, B, C, and D.
This health insurance company program is funded through the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund and the Supplementary Medical Insurance Trust Fund. It aims to provide medical procedures and care coverage, focusing mainly on the elderly. What will be covered depends solely on which part of the program is chosen.

Will Medicare Cover My Flu Shot?

Does Medicare Cover the Flu Shot - doctor at the office | Healthier Me Today

Many places accept Medicare Advantage Plans. Elderly people who have Medicare Part B, C, or D can receive their yearly flu shot for free.

If you meet the criteria of Medicare and depending on which plan you choose or are recommended, then yes, Medicare will cover your flu shot. Those covered are citizens 65 and over, the disabled, those with end-stage renal diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

How Can I Get Medicare Flu Shot Coverage?

To get Medicare flu shot coverage, you will need to see if you qualify for the B and C program plans. If you do, these parts will cover the entire cost of the flu shot. From here, you will need to phone your healthcare provider ahead of time to ensure that they accept Medicare coverage and payments. If they do, simply go to your pharmacy or healthcare provider, and they will provide you with your flu shot.

Medicare Part A-D

The Medicare program offers four options for whatever type of services are needed. Most beneficiaries opt for Parts A and B benefits through Original Medicare, which is provided directly through the federal government, the traditional fee-to-services program.

Using Traditional or Original Medicare will result in the government paying for the medical services you receive. With this, you are responsible for paying for a monthly premium for plan B, and some choose to do this as well for plan A.

If you choose to use the Medicare Advantage plan instead, this will offer the same benefits as Original Medicare but can do so with different rules, costs, and coverage restrictions, as well as typically receiving Part D, which covers prescription medication.
There are many different kinds of Medicare Advantage Plans, also known as Part C. Here is a list explaining what each of the various Parts covers.

Dental Implants with Medicare – Can I apply For Dental Implants if I am Under 65?

As stated, Medicare aims to aid people 65 and older, but other criteria are also accepted. This includes younger people with disabilities, End-Stage Renal Disease, and kidney dialysis or kidney transplant patients. Those younger than 65 years with specific disabilities who have received Social Security Disability benefits for 24 months can apply for Medicare coverage. Those who have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), although these individuals do not have to collect gifts for 24 months.

Those with ESRD will generally have three months after a course of regular dialysis begins before they can meet the requirements for Medicare. Individuals that meet all the needed requirements for Social Security Disability are often enrolled in Parts A and B, also known as Original Medicare. If the criteria are met but do not qualify for Social Security benefits, they can pay a monthly Part A premium and monthly Part B premium.

The beneficiaries are given entitlement to individualized assessment deciding if the coverage criteria are met. There isn’t any illness or underlying condition that will disqualify Medicare coverage. Such as long-term care or because their underlying condition will not show improvement. People with long-term conditions like Parkinson’s Disease, Mental Illness, Alzheimer’s Disease, or Multiple Sclerosis that have care orders from their doctor who meets the criteria for Medicare can obtain coverage.

Does Medicare cover braces or Cover any Other Dental Related Queries?

Medicare Advantage plans containing dental coverage offer many benefits relating to dental health. These include dental X-rays, routine teeth cleanings, fillings, root canals, gum disease treatment, dentures, bridges, crowns, routine dental exams, tooth extractions, and dental implants.

The coverage of your chosen plan may not include all these benefits, so it is advised to consult with your plan carrier to learn about what your Medicare plan covers dental-wise. Dental care can be added to your existing Medicare Advantage plan.

When signing up for a new Medicare Advantage plan, there will be an option for dental care services during this selection process. If already enrolled in the plan, you can talk to your provider about the available dental coverages. If there is no add-on dental coverage, you can enroll in a stand-alone dental policy.

Something to Sink Your Teeth Into – Medicare Advantage Cover Dental Care?

Dental implants are covered by Medicare but only in the Medicare Advantage plan unless you can have it as an add-on option to your current plan. Part C includes all the benefits of Part A and B, but it has extra services which include a wide variety of dental care options.

If adding these extra dental services to your current coverage plan, it’s more than likely that an additional monthly cost will be included. If people younger than 65 apply to enroll in the Medicare coverage plans, they first have to meet the criteria and be individually assessed by beneficiaries. Once approved, these will be available benefits, including dental care, but the conditions and accessibility may differ from those of senior citizens 65 and above.

Medicare Part B Special Enrollment – Complete Guide

Medicare offers many plans, and each has a role to play. There is a program suited for whatever benefits you need. Whether it be coverage on medical conditions such as end-stage renal disease to eye examinations. Of course, the benefits you receive rely on the program you enroll in.

There are four parts to Medicare, Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. Parts A and B are covered under Original Medicare, and Parts C is also known as Medicare Advantage. Part C includes both the benefits of A and B and extra services. Part D can stand alone or be included in your current plan.

Special enrollment for Part B covers different situations than the previous ones offer. It is more so related to job-based insurance.

What is Medicare B Special Enrollment?

For short, special Enrollment Periods, SEPs are periods outside the normal enrollment periods when you can enroll in health insurance. These periods are usually based on certain circumstances.

Special Enrollment Periods for Part B begins when you have coverage from your current work (job-based insurance), and you are in your first month of eligibility for Part B. It will end eight months after losing coverage from your current place of employment due to either the coverage ending or the employment.

When it comes to the difference between open enrollment and special enrollment, open enrollment has an annual window where you can enroll. Special enrollment is when you can enroll for coverage outside of the yearly window depending on if the circumstance is acceptable.

Medicare Part B Special Enrollment - female nurse | Healthier Me Today

Medicare works on an open enrollment basis, which means that people can enroll at a certain time during the year. The general enrollment period starts from January the first and ends March the 31st every year. The initial enrollment period is seven months when someone is first eligible for medicare. This period will begin three months before you turn 65, including the month you turn 65 and ends three months after turning 65.

Open enrollment is based on fixed dates and periods that a person can enroll. Although these periods are fixed, there isn’t only a one-time frame, but a few cater to certain eligibility. Special Enrollment Period is an opportunity to enroll in Medicare outside the Initial and the General Enrollment Periods. Those who are eligible based on their disability could meet the criteria for the Special Enrollment Period based on their spouse’s current employment.

People who didn’t enroll in Medicare when first eligible due to their spouse or themselves still working and having employer-sponsored Group Health Plan coverage based on the employment. They can enroll in the Special Enrollment Period.

The 3 Best Beneficial Facts About The 8 Minute Rule From Medicare!

8 minute rule – Learn more with Healthier Me Today! is put in place to govern the process by which rehab therapists determine how many units they should bill to Medicare. This is for the outpatient therapy services they provide on specific service dates. A therapist has to offer direct one-on-one time therapy for a minimum of 8 minutes to receive reimbursement for one unit of a time-based treatment code.

Time-based codes allow for variable billing in 15-minute increments. Time codes would be used for performing one-on-one services such as ultrasound, manual therapy, therapeutic activities, electrical stimulation, neuromuscular re-education, therapeutic exercise, and gait training.

What is the Medicare 8 Minute Rule?

8-minute Medicare rule

The medicare 8 minute rule is for time-based codes. There must be a direct treatment for at least eight minutes before receiving reimbursement from Medicare

When calculating the number of billable units for a particular service date, Medicare will add up the total minutes of one-on-one therapy and divide that by 15. If eight or more minutes are left over after a session, this can allow for one more unit to be billed, whereas if there are only seven or fewer minutes left, then an additional unit cannot be billed.

A chart can be used to reference how many units can be charged for some time. For example, it will start at eight to twenty-two minutes, resulting in 1 unit. The full-time reference is 83 minutes which will rack up to 6 units.

Example of the 8 minute Rule:

8-Minute Medicare Rule - Clock | Healthier Me Today

As an example of how the 8 minute rule will apply in a single date of service. Let’s say that there were 30 minutes of manual therapy, 15 minutes of therapeutic exercise, 15 minutes of electrical stimulation unattended, and 8 minutes of ultrasound. The constant attendance procedures and modalities will be added to correctly calculate the charge using the 8 minute rule.

Resulting in a sum that will look like this:

30+15+15+8= 53 minutes which supports the amount of four billing units.

The 15 minutes of electrical stimulation unattended will support one added service-based unit. That will be a total of 5 units for the date of service used above.

Often when the total timed minutes are divided by 15, there will be a reminder that will include minutes from more than one service. For example, when these minutes are combined, you have 5 minutes leftover from therapeutic exercise and then 3 minutes leftover from manual therapy.

Separately these do not meet the 8-minute requirement but once added, they then fit into the 8-minute threshold. However, as per Medicare guidelines, this means that you can bill one unit of the service with the larger amount of time total, so regarding the situation we discussed, the therapeutic exercise will be the one that can be billed for.

What does the Rule of 8 Stand for?

8-minute Medicare rule

The 8 minute rule stipulates that you can bill Medicare Insurance carriers for one full unit if the service provided is between 8 and 22 minutes. It can only apply to time-based CPT codes. Keep in mind that the 8-Minute Medicare Rule does not apply to every time-based CPT code or in every situation that might occur.

The billing for physical medical services is based on what is referred to as the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system. This system is composed of 5 digit codes used for third-party billing payers.

Often Medicare is the primary third-party payer that will foot the bill for outpatient physical medicine services. These payments will typically be based on a fee schedule based on the time codes and the 8-Minute Medicare Rule.

The first procedure has to be at the least 8 minutes, and then each one after that will be billed in 15-minute increments. Only direct one-on-one and face-to-face time with a patient will be considered for timed codes.

The rule of eights still counts billable units in 15-minute increments; however, instead of combining the time from multiple units, the rule is applied apart from the unique timed services.

Is Assessment and Management Part of the 8 Minute Rule?

8-Minute Medicare Rule - Man Standing with arms folded | Healthier Me Today

On some occasions, therapists will mistake adding assessment and management time when counting the billable minutes. Not in every case, the assessment and management time can be omitted. There are some instances where there are allowances.

Some examples of this are:

  1. Documenting in the presence of a patient.
  2. Assessing the patient prior to performing a hands-on intervention.
  3.  Answering patients and if there is a caregiver present, then their questions as well.
  4. Assessing the patient’s response to the intervention.
  5. Instructing, counseling, and giving advice about home self-care.

If your documentation is accurate, describes the treatment, is easily understood by another provider. This will be enough to justify the reason behind billing for assessment and management. If the time that wasn’t used by performing the medical practice is still in the scope and will aid in the condition or problem that the patient is facing, then it is allowed and justified for the therapist to bill for this information or insight.

Medicare 8 Minute Rule…

The medicare 8 minute rule is put in place to keep order and understanding when billing patients. It ensures the correct amount is being charged and helps the patient understand how the Medicare time is billed.

The charges made based on the added time and then divided by 15 will be sent to Medicare. If time is left over from any medical situation, they can be added together. If they reach a total of 8 minutes, then whichever has the most extra time will be given one unit.

Hosting a party can take away the dread and pressure of the day. It can be enjoyed by all the people you hold dear. It’s also a way to show everyone how much they mean to you all in one sitting.

Preparing For The Party

Preparing for any party can be exciting but a little stressful at the same time. That is why it’s always good to plan ahead. Writing down all the items you will need can help make it easier. It also ensures that you won’t forget anything! So make sure there are no last-minute trips to get ice by following these guidelines we’ve created:

  • Firstly, make a guest list: This can help you see how many people you’re catering for.
  • Make sure to design invitations or inform your guests ahead of time.
  • Decide on a theme: Although it is Valentine’s Day, there are a lot of variations when it comes to romance.
  • Make a note of any allergies your guests may have: No one wants to spend Valentine’s Day in the hospital!
  • If you have people helping you, then assign roles: For example, someone can take charge of the snacks and another the music. This will help with diversity as well and introduce new ideas. Not to mention lessen the load for yourself.
  • If you plan on ordering any items, especially online, make sure you do it ahead of time. Check the delivery date to ensure it arrives before and not after the day!
  • Gather the decorations you’ll need as well as any crafting tools. If you plan to make any of the decorations yourself, first do a test trial. Remember, practice makes perfect.
  • If you are hosting it at your home, ensure enough space: Although it’s a day to be close to your loved ones, do so without being cramped together.
  • It may not be the Christmas holiday but still, check your list twice! Going over your list can help point out things you’ve forgotten or help ensure that you’ve gotten everything you need.
  • Don’t forget odds and ends: Often we focus on the aesthetic and forget about functionality. Provide adequate utensils, seating, toiletries, and so on.
  • If children are allowed, consider them: Cater to their pallets and provide entertainment for them.
  • Make sure to take a step back now and again: It’s meant to be fun, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself!
